First turbine installed at Poland's Baltic Power offshore wind farm
The first of 76 turbines has been installed at the Baltic Power offshore wind farm. The project, a joint venture between Orlen Group and Northland Power, is Poland’s first offshore wind farm with commissioning expected in 2026.
The 1.2-gigawatt (GW) wind farm will be able to produce four terawatt-hours of energy per year, enough to cover three per cent of Poland's national electricity demand and power over 1.5 million households, according to Baltic Power. The 15 MW turbines are supplied by Vestas and are described as one of the largest types available. Each has a total height of over 260 metres.
The turbine installation is being carried out by contractor Cadeler using the jack-up vessel Wind Osprey. Jens Poulsen, the project's director, stated that the installation is a major logistical challenge and that other work, such as the installation of foundations and cables, is progressing simultaneously with a fleet of around 15 vessels.
Grzegorz Szabliński, President of the Management Board of Baltic Power, noted that several key components for the wind farm are being produced locally in Poland, including nacelles for the turbines from a Vestas factory in Szczecin.
