250MW floating offshore wind project in Mediterranean Sea to go ahead
French energy companies Engie and EDP Renewables have been awarded a 250MW floating offshore wind project by the French Ministry of Industry and Energy through Ocean Winds, their 50-50 joint-venture.
Part of the AO6 call for tenders, the project, dubbed “Eoliennes Flottantes d'Occitanie” (EFLO), is located off the coast of Narbone in the Mediterranean Sea.
Its total installed capacity of 250 MW will generate around one TWh of electricity per year, providing enough energy to meet the domestic energy needs of nearly 500,000 people.
Ocean Winds is the operator of WindFloat Atlantic, the first floating wind farm in continental Europe. Together with Banque des Territoires, the joint-venture currently has three offshore wind projects under construction in France, totalling one gigawatt of installed capacity.
These are Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL), a 30MW floating offshore wind farm in the Gulf of Lion (operational at the end of 2025); Îles d'Yeu et Noirmoutier (operational at the end of 2025); and Dieppe Le Tréport (operational in 2026).
Including the EFLO project, Ocean Winds has now a portfolio of 18.8GW under operations, construction or secured development globally.
