North Star taps Norwegian builder for hybrid SOV pair

UK operator North Star has selected Norwegian shipbuilder Vard for the design and construction of two hybrid service operation vessels (SOVs) in a series.

Designed by Vard Design in Ålesund, the SOVs will each have a length of 87.5 metres, a beam of 19.5 metres, a height-adjustable motion-compensated gangway with elevator system, a boat landing system, and accommodation for up to 120 personnel.

Vard said each vessel will also be equipped with a battery hybrid system and will be ready for future conversion to operation on methanol.

An electronics package from Vard Electro will include integrated systems for power, control, bridge, and communication. Vard Interiors will meanwhile contribute HVAC-R installation and interior works, ensuring onboard comfort and functionality.

The hull of the first SOV will be constructed at Vard Shipyards Romania while final outfitting will be undertaken at one of Vard's facilities in Norway. Delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.

The second SOV will be built entirely at Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam. Delivery of this vessel is scheduled for Q4 2028.
