Construction begins on hybrid electric SOV for UK's North Star
India's Cochin Shipyard has cut the first steel to be used in the construction of the second service operation vessel (SOV) ordered from the company by UK operator North Star.
Upon completion, the Vard-designed SOV will have a length of 86 metres, a DP2 system, and a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion arrangement consisting of Yanmar generators and lithium-ion batteries. A walk-to-work system from SMST will also be fitted.
The vessel will provide single-cabin accommodation for up to 80 personnel including technicians and crew. It will also serve as a logistics hub and warehouse.
The vessel will be designed with an advanced power system combining a DC switchboard with the energy storage system. Vard said this integration will streamline onboard energy utilisation and optimise distribution systems, leading to higher overall efficiency in all operating modes.
The SOV is due to be delivered to Siemens Gamesa to commence operations in late 2026. It will support operations at the East Anglia offshore wind farms in UK waters.
