The CEO of Maersk Oil and Gas, Thomas Thune Andersen, said recently that Maersk was aiming to become a world leader in the oil and gas sector within the next decade.

Already one of the world's largest shipping lines in terms of tankers and containerships, Mr Andersen said that Maersk was hoping to gain international recognition as an oil company in large parts of the world.

"We want to be known as one of the leading companies within specific technological flows, and we will establish partnerships with national as well as international oil companies," MaritimeDanmark quoted Mr Andersen as saying.

"We have to be in front on technology, to be robust and deliver what we promise in a safe and secure way."

Maersk Oil and Gas currently produces about 650,000 barrels of oil a day from oilfields in the Danish and British parts of the North Sea, Qatar and Kazakhstan. It is in the top 25 of large non-government owned oil and gas companies. Maersk is seeking to raise its ranking significantly.
