The tug 'Fairmount Glacier' has successfully assisted in the installation of the floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) 'Usan', offshore Nigeria.
Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, 'Usan' is one of the world's largest FPSOs: 320 metres long and 61 metres wide. Netherlands-based Fairmount Marine was contracted by Saipem Energies for the operation, which needed a 200-tonne bollard pull tug.
'Fairmount Glacier' had just completed a successful docking in Durban (South Africa) when it was contracted for the job. On August 4, the tug connected to 'Usan'. After almost nine weeks of continuous heading control and other general assistance, the FPSO was successfully installed.
The Usan oilfield was discovered about ten years ago. The field is situated 100 kilometres south of Port Harcourt, with water depths up to 850 metres.
