Orsted to commission seabed survey for proposed Isle of Man offshore wind farm

Published on

A geotechnical seabed survey for Orsted’s proposed Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm will be carried out in Isle of Man waters in June. The survey will be conducted by specialist contractor GEO using its survey vessel Connector.

The work will take place six to twelve nautical miles off the coast of Maughold and is expected to take six to eight days to complete. The survey will involve conducting twenty seafloor cone penetration tests to determine the geotechnical properties of the soils in the proposed lease area granted to Orsted by the Isle of Man Government.

The survey will cost approximately £2 million and is being funded entirely by Orsted.

Richard Watson, the project's Technical Director, stated that gathering the geotechnical data now is essential for the developer to stay on track to meet the proposed operational start date of 2031-2033 for what would be the Isle of Man’s first offshore wind farm.

The project is still subject to Isle of Man planning consent.
