Siem Industries orders two subsea construction vessels from Chinese yard

The 145-metre vessels will each carry 400-tonne and 50-tonne active-heave-compensated subsea cranes, with deliveries due in 2029 and 2030.

Siem Industries has ordered two vessels for offshore subsea construction (OSCV) from China's Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding, with deliveries scheduled for 2029 and 2030.

Sirius Design and Integration worked with Siem and the shipyard to develop the design. Each vessel will have a length of 145 metres and a beam of 27 metres.

The OSCVs will each be fitted with a 400-tonne active-heave-compensated (AHC) subsea crane and a 50-tonne AHC subsea crane.

Siem said the design prioritises flexibility in operations and efficient energy use. The company added that the vessels are intended to undertake varied work throughout the offshore energy sectors.

Siem Industries had disclosed in August that the group placed an order for two newbuild OSCVs in July, with delivery by a Chinese builder in 2029/30.

In late August, Sirius announced a contract to design two construction support vessels for construction at Fujian Mawei for an undisclosed customer. The contract covered two firm vessels plus options for two more.

Each design measured 144.7 metres long and 27 metres in beam and featured two systems for launching and retrieving remotely operated vehicles (ROV).

Siem's existing subsea fleet includes the 2014-built OSCV Siem Stingray, which has a 250-tonne AHC offshore subsea crane and two work-class ROVs.
