Azule Energy announces gas discovery at exploration well in Angola
Azule Energy and its partners announced on July 11 a gas discovery at the Gajajeira-01 exploration well in Block 1/14, offshore Angola. A company official described the well as the country’s first dedicated gas exploration well.
The well, which was spudded on April 1 in a water depth of 95 metres, encountered gas- and condensate-bearing sandstones. Initial assessments suggest gas volumes on site may exceed one trillion cubic feet, with up to 100 million barrels of associated condensate.
Azule Energy, an incorporated joint venture of BP and Eni, operates the block with a 35 per cent interest, in partnership with Equinor (30 per cent), Sonangol E&P (25 per cent), and Acrep (10 per cent).
Paulino Jerónimo, Chairman of Angola's national agency ANPG, stated that new discoveries are a motivating factor for attracting private investment and that the gas is vital for enhancing domestic energy access and industry. Drilling operations at the well are ongoing.
