US drilling services provider Diamond Offshore Drilling announced yesterday that a subsidiary has entered into a contract with a shipyard in Brownsville, Texas for the construction of a moored semisubmersible rig.

The rig, to be named 'Ocean Onyx', will be designed to operate in water depths up to 1,800 metres and will have a variable deck load of 5,000 tonnes, a five-ram blowout preventer, and accoomodation capacity for 140 personnel. Delivery of the rig is scheduled for the third quarter of 2013. Total costs, including commissioning, spares and project management, but excluding capitalised interest, are expected to be approximately US$300 million.
