Australia: Shell Australia yesterday announced that its Concerto-1 well had hit gas and could be developed commercially.
This would make it the second offshore discovery in Western Australia. The other gas find is the Prelude field, located 16km away.
"Work is now under way to establish the extent of the find," said a Shell spokesperson. "It is too early to estimate volumesĀ but the indications are sufficient for us to be looking at ways to commercialise it."
The Prelude field, according to The Australian, is thought to contain up to 85 billion cubic metres of gas.
The second find now boosts chances of Western Australia hosting one of the world's first floating LNG export platforms. The planned floating LNG ships are 450-metres-long and cost US$5 billion each.
