TSHD Stuyvesant returns to service after fire damage repairs

Published on:

The trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) Stuyvesant, owned by The Dutra Group, has returned to service less than eight months after suffering significant fire damage on November 2, 2024.

The vessel successfully completed sea trials on June 20, 2025, and resumed work days later.

The restoration project was led by McCullough Engineering Services (MES) and was conducted at the BAE Systems shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida. The work followed an assessment of fire damage in the vessel's engine room and machinery control room which was also conducted by MES.

The scope of the restoration included the complete rebuild of the machinery control system, the design and installation of a new certified switchboard and main engine control system, and the replacement of all damaged cables in the engine room. A new fire detection system was also installed.

Devin Smith, Vice President of Commercial Programs at MES, stated that the restored Stuyvesant is back to work and fully capable.
