Sand renourishment to begin at Australia's Jimmys Beach in August
Australia's MidCoast Council will commence a sand renourishment project at Jimmys Beach this month to reduce the risks associated with coastal erosion in the area. The works are scheduled to take place between August 18 and September 30, weather permitting.
The project is described by the council as a short-term solution to provide a temporary sand buffer to the coastline, which is constantly being eroded by the ocean. Sand for the renourishment program will be sourced from the dredging of the Myall River.
Robert Scott, the council’s Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Services, stated that the work aims to provide protection as well as maintain beach amenity. “Sand renourishment is undertaken to provide a buffer to reduce the risk of erosion impacts on assets such as the road,” he said.
Jimmys Beach, located on the Winda Woppa peninsula at Hawks Nest, has been identified by the New South Wales Government as one of fifteen coastal erosion hotspots in the state. During the upcoming works, the public is advised to follow all signage and directions from work crews on site.
