Russian state-owned port operator Rosmorport has selected local company Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant for the construction of six new self-propelled hopper barges in a series.

Onega was selected following a competitive tender process. Construction of the six vessels will then commence in fulfilment of the RUB6.6 billion (US$69 million) newbuilding contract.

The contract stipulates that the first three barges be handed over to Rosmorport no later than December 1, 2026, May 1, 2027, and September 1, 2027, respectively. The final three vessels will meanwhile need to be delivered no later than December 25, 2027.

Upon completion, Each barge will have a length of approximately 60 metres, a beam of 14 metres, a draught of no more than three metres, a total hopper capacity of 600 cubic metres, a speed of at least 10 knots, and space for six crewmembers.

The new hopper barges will be operated out of Rosmorport's Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch.
