Maintenance dredging set for Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour in Western Australia
Mid West Ports Authority (MWPA) has announced it will soon carry out a routine maintenance dredging project at the Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour to remove naturally accumulated sediment and ensure safe vessel access.
The port authority stated that dredging is essential to support the continued operation of the marine hub, which is home to commercial fishing operations, including the western rock lobster industry, as well as recreational boating and local tourism, all of which contribute significantly to Geraldton’s economy.
As part of the project, dredged sand will be temporarily stored on Pages Beach. Access to a section of the beach will be limited during the project to ensure public safety.
Following temporary storage, the sand will be transported by road in stages to be used for nourishment on other designated beaches to provide coastal protection. The port noted that transport routes and schedules will be carefully managed to minimise disruption to the community.
