Dredging and channel clearance in the lower Ha Thanh River basin in Vietnam's Gia Lai province were 85–90 per cent complete as of mid-October, with the remaining work scheduled to finish before the rainy season.
To Tan Thi, director of the Gia Lai Provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board, told Thanh Nien that the work covers Quy Nhon Bac and Quy Nhon Dong wards and Tuy Phuoc commune.
Crews are removing vegetation and accumulated sediment to open the drainage route towards Thi Nai Lagoon.
At the VND80 billion ($3.09 million) Cay Dua dam in Tuy Phuoc, project commander Huynh Cong Thanh said construction had reached about 90 per cent by work volume. More than 14,000 cubic metres of soil, sand and silt have been removed from a 400-metre reach of the Truong Uc, a branch of the Ha Thanh, between the foot of the dam and Truong Uc Bridge.
The provincial agriculture and environment department put the executed value of dredging and flow-clearance work at VND7.26 billion of a planned VND8.067 billion.
Land clearance remains unresolved in parts of Quy Nhon Bac and Tuy Phuoc. In Tuy Phuoc, 30 of 49 cases affecting the Cat River dike corridor have been addressed.
The work forms part of a 2026–2030 flood-drainage programme that the province approved in February. The programme has an estimated cost of VND2.675 trillion, split between VND280.149 billion in 2026 and VND2.395 trillion in 2027–2030.
Later works include a VND650 billion Huynh Mai channel to divert Kon River floodwater to Thi Nai Lagoon.
Typhoon Kalmaegi and the 2025 floods damaged 560 fishing boats in the province.
