Galveston beach nourishment project to begin in September
A beach nourishment project is scheduled to begin in September on a nearly two-mile (3.2-kilometre) stretch of Galveston Island's west end in Texas. The project is a partnership between the Texas General Land Office (GLO), the City of Galveston, and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
The work, to be carried out by contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, will place "beach-quality" dredged material from the Galveston Ship Channel onto the shoreline between Sunbather Lane and 11-Mile Road. City Manager Brian Maxwell stated that the project is essential, with erosion rates in the area, "approaching seven feet per year".
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said the project will help reduce the erosion rate, protecting recreational opportunities, wildlife habitats, and storm resilience.
The City of Galveston formally requested assistance from the USACE in June 2025 to address the significant erosion, which led to a feasibility study that allowed the project to move forward.
