Damen has delivered a cutter suction dredger to 4Clans Nig for waterfront land reclamation in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. The delivery was announced on Tuesday, September 22.
The stationary dredger, named Lady Caroline, will work on the Niger City Project along the River Niger. Its 250kW cutter will cut material for the reclamation work.
Damen modified the dredger for shallow-water operations by fitting a wedge component to the suction ladder. The company also installed an adaptor to connect the discharge pipeline.
The dredger was disassembled at Damen’s yard in the Netherlands and shipped to Nigeria as separate pontoons, with other components packed in containers. Damen field service engineers supported reassembly and commissioning at the project site, including training and familiarization for the operating crew.
“The arrival of the [dredger] marks a significant milestone for the Niger City Project,” 4Clans Executive Director Theodore Omalu said. “This investment reinforces our commitment to delivering a world-class waterfront development that will create lasting economic opportunities for Delta State and Nigeria.”
Published project material describes plans to reclaim approximately 400 hectares of swamp and seasonally flooded land using sand from the River Niger. It estimates that the work will require about 10 million cubic metres of fill, with finished ground levels ranging from three to nine metres.
The wider proposal includes a retaining wall and waterfront promenade, while reclaimed areas are intended for residential and commercial development.
