Ports of Auckland announces first half results

New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland has recorded a profit of NZ$84 million (US$61 million) for the first half of 2016, up NZ$21 million on last year, despite a drop in bulk and container volumes.

The company’s revenue was NZ$211 million, NZ$7 million less than 2015 and underlying expenses were NZ$105.7 million, down NZ$12.7 million.

New container terminal in Jakarta starts commercial operations

A new container terminal has opened for commercial service at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The new terminal will be operated by the newly established joint venture New Priok Container Terminal One, founded by IPC, Mitsui, PSA and NYK Line to construct and manage the new container terminal.

COSCO Shipping confirms acquisition of Piraeus Port

COSCO Shipping and the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) have confirmed that COSCO will acquire 67 per cent of equities of the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA).

Piraeus’ geographic location, the Chinese Belt and Road initiative and close Sino-Hellenic relations are said to have influenced COSCO’s decision to pursue a share of the PPA.

New York and New Jersey harbour deepening in final stages

The USA’s New York and New Jersey harbour deepening project has been completed after more than 20 years and US$1.6 billion of improvements.

Now finished, the project was carried out to create a safe and efficient route for large container and cruise ships.

Cairns targets mega ship cruising

The Cairns Shipping Development Project will now target mega cruise ships up to 300 metres in length, the Queensland, Australia state treasurer Curtis Pitt has said.

The decision is expected to help the Port of Cairns to take advantage of the strong growth forecasted for the market.
