The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) and other local partners are considering putting up a new ship recycling facility on the country’s west coast.

The Hong Kong Convention-compliant facility is expected to be built on property within the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone north of the Cape of Good Hope.

The facility will be equipped with a ship lifting system to eliminate the need for beaching decommissioned vessels, a process known to pose risks to the surrounding environment.
