Bangladeshi media reports that an explosion at a shipbreaking yard in Chattogram over the weekend has left one person dead and three others critically injured.

The incident occurred at around 14:00 local time on Saturday, June 19, as workers were dismantling a ship using acetylene torches at the SN Corporation yard in Chattogram.

Witnesses said one of the ship’s boilers exploded during the dismantling operation.

Four workers suffered severe injuries from the blast and were rushed to hospital. One of the workers was later pronounced dead while the three survivors remain in critical condition.

Local media outlets said this is the second major shipbreaking-related mishap to occur in Chattogram this year. Earlier in April, three yard workers at a different facility suffered burn injuries caused by a pipe explosion on a vessel that was also being dismantled.
