Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has made a number of additions to the requirements of its Environmental Passport (EP), following the announcement by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) last month that the  Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) will soon be introduced as a mandatory standard for newbuild ships.

The EP is a voluntary class notation and certification for ships, compiling all mandatory and voluntary environmental features of a vessel in a single document including flag state certificates, compliance certificates, NOx emission diagrams and the EP certificate itself. According to GL, the EP is the one of the most successful voluntary class notations it has ever offered with nearly 10 percent of GL's fleet in service having opted for this class notation.

As of August 1, GL added the following new requirements:

  1. Discharge of bilge water permitted only if the oil content is below 5ppm. Vessels are also required to have a monitoring and stopping device installed.

  2. An approved ballast water treatment system must be installed.
  3. The attained EEDI value to be certified by GL.

  4. An Inventory of Hazardous Material (IHM) to be certified by GL.

Also from August 1, the order date of the EP will now determine which edition of the EP will apply, not, as in previous editions, the date of the building contract.
