BIMCO releases EEDI Calculator

Published on:

BIMCO has created an EEDI Calculator, for assistance in the calculation methodology for the IMO's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

The EEDI Calculator is based on the calculation guidelines contained in IMO Circular MEPC.1/Circ.681. The calculation guideline is still being reviewed by the MEPC, and BIMCO will issue updated versions of the EEDI Calculator as amendments are published in the future.

The EEDI is implemented as a new chapter to MARPOL Annex VI, becoming mandatory for ships constructed after January 1, 2013. The EEDI will be required as part of the IAPP Certificate for new ships of certain categories: bulk carriers, gas carriers, tankers, container ships, general cargo ships, refrigerated cargo carriers and combination carriers. Ships in these categories must have an EEDI assigned before entering service and above certain threshold sizes must have an EEDI below a required value.

The EEDI Calculator provides the means for calculating both a ship's attained EEDI as well as the required EEDI, if applicable.
