MTU subsidiary Tognum (soon to be renamed Rolls-Royce Power Systems), has been awarded a contract by Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine) to power eight upcoming patrol vessels for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) with Series-4000 diesel engines.

Currently under construction at ST Marine's Singapore Benoi yard, the new vessels will replace the RSN's 55-metre x 8.6-metre Fearless-class patrol vessels, which were also built by Singapore Technologies in the 1990s and are powered by MTU 12 V 595 TE 90 diesel engines.

Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) awarded the eight-vessel order to ST Engineering in January, 2013. The first vessel will be delivered in 2016 and all eight vessels will be fully operational by 2020. Each vessel will be installed with high-efficiency MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines.

According to MTU, each engine unit is rated for 4,300kW and optimised for low fuel consumption and an extended service life.
