GEAR | Baudouin’s advanced engines with SCR power NYC Ferry fleet

MEPS WEEK

French manufacturer Moteurs Baudouin’s M26.3+SCR engines are certified IMO III and EPA 4 engines, a validation that many other engine manufacturers cannot match. With these certifications in hand, approval of nearly all IACS members, and IMO III and EPA 4 vessels in operation, Baudouin has the tried and tested solutions available to meet the needs of vessels operators today and in the future.

Designed with the latest technology, the M26.3 engines offer a cleaner engine without compromising on power, and up to 25dB noise reduction. An extensive power range is on offer, including continuous duty up to 1,200 hp (894 kW), heavy duty up to 1,500 hp (1,118 kW), and intermittent duty up to 1,650 hp (1,230 kW). The engines also deliver effective low speed torque for increased acceleration and better manoeuvrability, meaning a safe and smooth ride for passengers.

High fuel efficiency is another feature of the M26.3 engines, providing up to two per cent reduction in fuel consumption on average. This means extended annual cruising up to 4,700 additional nautical miles compared to other engines (based on 3,000 hours per year at a typical 20-knot cruise speed.

With the addition of optimised selective catalyst reduction technology (SCR), these engines go beyond the stringent requirements of both IMO III and EPA 4.

The Baudouin SCR system is smaller, lighter and more flexible than other solutions currently on the market, reducing costs and space requirements, while maximising product reliability. These advantages are critical when existing vessels need to re-power and meet the emissions regulations in their operating area.

In addition, one of the biggest advantages of Baudouin’s system is its high degree of installation flexibility: you can choose to place the tank, pump and cabinet up to 60 metres away from the catalyst. The system can be installed over the gearbox, over the engine, or in a stand-alone configuration which offers exponential options for installation. This offers freedom and flexibility with both newbuilds and re-powering projects.

If any assistance is needed, Baudouin can offer full design support to integrate the system. This includes advice on mounting, materials, storage, maintenance and more, making them an easy solution to purchase and install.

Baudouin’s advanced engines with SCR already operate on passenger ferries and tourist boats around the world.

First announced by the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, the NYC Ferry service provides a new way to travel between waterfront communities throughout New York City. Launched in May 2017, the six routes span over 60 nautical miles of waterways, connecting over nine million people annually between Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

The entire ferry network is powered by Baudouin M26.3+SCR engines. Moving on from traditional propulsion, Baudouin is also getting ready to implement its engines alongside hybrid systems, with the possibility to reduce emissions even more in the future. The 6M26.3+SCR will be joined by such a hybrid solution, to manage the power requirements onboard while the ferry pauses to load and unload passengers. This will bypass the thermal system and create further efficiencies.

It’s another way Baudouin is looking to the future, leveraging marine experience and research and development teams to limit emissions and increase efficiency for vessel operators, as worldwide emission regulations are set to tighten further.
