GEAR | BAR Technologies, Cargill to develop wind propulsion system for commercial ships

Cargill and BAR Technologies have embarked on a strategic project with naval architect Deltamarin Finland to supply wind propulsion technology to commercial shipping.

The project will see BAR Technologies’ 45-metre solid wing fitted to the decks of bulk cargo vessels to harness the power of the wind and reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 30 per cent. The number of wing sails can be tailored to the size of the vessel and the route it will take.

The first vessel to be fitted with the new technology is expected to begin sea trials by 2022.

The project is currently in the design phase.
