Caterpillar Marine Power Systems has announced that from January 2012 full production will start on the latest version of its Cat 3500C marine engines, which meet the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Tier 3 emissions regulations. The Tier 3 compliant Cat 3500C offerings will include propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines. Cat 3500C offerings will not require after-treatment modules to meet Tier 3 regulations as a result of the incorporation of new fuel and air system modifications into the design of the engines.

The 3512C Tier 3 is a vee-12 cylinder engine with a 170-millimetre bore, a 215-millimetre stroke, and 58.6-litre displacement. The 3516C Tier 3 is a vee-16 cylinder with the same bore and stroke, but with 78.08-litre displacement. Both engine series include various 1,600rpm and 1,800rpm options with power ratings ranging between 1,000kW and 2,525kW, designed for various applications and duty cycles with added enhancements to increase durability.

For customers operating in IMO-II regulated waters and non-EPA regulated territories, the Cat 3500C Tier 2 compliant engines will still be available in 2012. Those customers operating within EPA-regulated waters will be able to order the Tier 3 compliant 3512C and 3516C engines from the fourth quarter of 2011.
