Alewijnse Marine Systems has completed its 1,000th installation of an automatic identification system (AIS) transponder onboard an inland vessel based in the Netherlands.

A new regulation has recently been introduced that requires inland commercial vessels to have AIS installed before 2013, and Alewijnse is working with operators in the sector to ensure that they are fully compliant. Compact and easy to install, Alewijnse's Explorer AIS system was introduced at the start of 2011 and is the first in the company's new range of inland AIS products.

The system is designed to integrate seamlessly with other onboard navigation electronics, with software that is easy to use via a simple menu structure that makes it straightforward to view critical information on other AIS-equipped shipping in the vicinity. In addition Alewijnse offers a dual GPS/VHF antenna as an alternative to the usual dual antenna setup, and customers can choose between an inland and offshore configuration.
