From Baird Maritime:

Their memories may be rapidly fading but Britain was once home to considerable fleets of specialised and effective fishing boats.

As in most "developed western" nations, fishing was a significant industry until about 1980. As elsewhere, it was cut to bits by a combination of bureaucratic and environmentalist malevolence, political disinterest and the industry's own ineptitude, disunity and lack of spirit.

In its heyday, however, the industry was full of enterprise, energy and innovation. This, as is clearly shown in this book, was well illustrated by the development of various classes of highly effective vessels used in the prosecution of fishing.

The Lancashire Nobby was a classic example of the traditional English fishing boat. Many thousands of these fast, sleek, yacht-like fishing boats operated from the mid-nineteenth century in Lancashire and western Scotland. Most were operated as stern or side-trawlers but some were potters and long-liners. They were good boats.

The author has done a first class job of recording the exciting history of these very attractive and interesting craft.
