The Commander of the Somali Coast Guard, General Farah Ahmed Omar, has said that piracy would not be curbed unless illegal fishing by foreign nations stopped.
He explained that the illegal fishing and exploitation of Somali's marine resources were the main factors which encouraged youths to head to sea to defend them.
"The pirates can be classified as youth that reacted to illegal practices taking place along the Somali coast," the Daily Nation quoted General Omar as saying.
He also appealed to the international community to act against those illegally exploiting Somalia's fisheries.
