Peru sets 150,000-ton anchovy quota for human consumption

Published on

Peru’s Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has established a maximum total catch limit of 150,000 tons for anchovy destined for direct human consumption for 2025. The measure applies to all artisanal and small-scale fishing activities along the Peruvian coast.

According to the ministry, the decision is based on a technical analysis of the resource's performance and is supported by scientific information from the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE). The stated goal is to strengthen the supply for the direct human consumption industry without compromising the "sustainability" of the marine ecosystem.

Jesús Barrientos, the Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, stated that the measure reflects a commitment to "responsible fishing" that both protects the marine ecosystem and promotes direct human consumption as a key driver of development for the country's fishing families. The ministry added that the policy aims to boost artisanal fishing and aligns with national food security objectives.

PRODUCE will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with the new limit to ensure the traceability and sustainability of the resource throughout 2025.
