Canada more than doubles northern cod quota for 2025-26 season

Published on:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has increased the total allowable catch (TAC) for northern cod stock from 18,000 tonnes to 38,000 tonnes for the 2025-26 seasons.

The office stated the increase is based on recent scientific data showing the stock has been stable since 2017 and is at a higher level than previously understood.

In contrast, the TAC for capelin, a key food source for cod, will remain unchanged at 14,533 tonnes as a precautionary measure, as stocks are anticipated to decrease to recent average levels.

For recreational cod fishery, management measures will remain unchanged for 2025. The government will launch public consultations to inform future decisions, noting that while the northern cod stock has improved, two other cod stocks on the province's south and west coasts remain in the "critical zone".

A new voluntary pilot program is also being launched for certified tour boat operators. The program will use a new tagging system, allowing passengers to retain two groundfish per day, seven days a week.

The total landed value of the northern cod fishery in 2024 was approximately $37.5 million.
