AWARDS 2024 | Best Large Trawler – Ginneton – Karstensens Skibsvaerft

Ginneton is a very elegant, almost yacht-like trawler built for a very experienced repeat customer of the builder Karstensens Skibsvaerft.

A true ship, she has been designed, built and equipped to voyage almost anywhere, at up to 16 knots in search of her increasingly expensive quarry.

With the global fishing industry having learnt the hard way that you have to get bigger and better or get out, the ship’s owner has made the very logical decision to do both with its magnificent new ship.

"Ginneton was first of her size to boast the vertical stem design," Kent Damgaard, Yard Director at Karstensens Skibsværft, told Baird Maritime.

"[The] original contract featured a very flared bow, but only a couple of weeks prior to steel cutting, [the] owners [and the] yard agreed to go for the vertical bow design, a decision that has proven to be very successful with regards to the vessel's performance and sea keeping.

"Ginneton is also a class-first to feature enclosed water separator area enhancing crew comfort and safety."

Damgaard said the vessel was built with a strict tonnage limit, hence the need to create "as much ship as possible" within the given parameters.

"We had an extremely busy 2024, having delivered five highly sophisticated newbuilding[s] to different owners, different specs and different designs," said Damgaard.

"In addition, our repair department had an all-time high [in terms of vessels served] in 2024."
