Tuna fishermen in Canada are working quickly to bring in bluefin tuna for the August part of the fishing season.

The fishermen have agreed voluntarily to catch most of the 138-tonne quota in October when the fish are larger, however, not all the fish can be caught then because the weather in Canada turns bad very quickly.

Other rules have also been adopted to help ease the pressure on bluefin tuna stocks, for example, each boat is only allowed to catch one fish per day.

At moment, fishermen said that the catch has been good and that the 40-tonne quota for August would soon be met. Tuna prices are also low at the moment, ranging from US$3.60 to US$10.84 per pound. A year ago, the average price was US$9.94 a pound. One fisherman explained that waiting for the tuna to fatten would fetch higher prices.
