Cambodian fishermen turn to fish farming at home

Published on

Some Cambodian fishermen have turned to home-based fish farming to supplement the poor catches they have been bringing in. Some fishing families now float several large reed-matted bamboo cages to farm fish.

This is because fishermen in the Chong Khneas commune near the Tonle Sap Lake said that the wild catch was rapidly decreasing and that they needed to find a way to make a living and feed their families.

"Twenty years ago, a small boat would catch up to 100 to 150kg of fish a day. Now most small fishermen catch around 10kg a day," Mainh Lorn, 55, told the Cambodia Daily.

Mr Lorn added that illegal fishing was exacerbating the situation. The government bans all fishing activity between June and September.

Senior government fisheries expert Touch Seang Tana said that while small scale fishermen were unable to cope with the decreasing catch, larger operations were doing relatively well.
