South Korea: Aquaculture experts from the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DFRDI) have said that local bluefin tuna farms will soon be ready to start selling fish.
Tuna farming began in South Korea in 2007 with just eleven fish. There are now over 300 bluefin tuna being raised in net cages.
The experts said that South Korea should be able to make its first commercial sales by 2015.
The President of the Insung Marine Product Company, Hong Seok-nam said that aquaculture was a viable alternative to fishing. With South Korea's proximity to Japan, there is a lot potential.
Japan is the largest consumer market in the world for bluefin tuna. The average Japanese person consumes 3,720 grams of bluefin tuna per year while the average South Korean ate just 57 grams of tuna, Mr Hong said.
