Norwegian company AKVA Group has contracted Estonia-based Marketex Marine to build what it claims to be the biggest fish feeding barge in the world.
The all-steel vessel will measure 40 metres in length, with a breadth of 12 metres. It will weigh 850 tonnes and will be constructed on a turnkey basis for the AKVA group.
Scheduled for delivery in September, the barge will be delivered ready for commissioning following function testing and certification of all its systems at the shipyard. The vessel will then be towed and put into commission on fish farms.
According to Marketex Marine, global growth in the fish farming sector is high, with the industry predicted to supply a significant proportion of the world's fish protein by 2030.
