
The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi and Kinki University, Japan, have signed an agreement of cooperation on aquaculture research and development.
The Government of Abu Dhabi has said that it hopes to begin bluefin tuna farming with the assistance of technological support from the top Japanese University.
"We recognise the importance of aquaculture in the development of fish production and the establishment of an environmentally sustainable stock," said an official from the Government of Abu Dhabi.
A feasibility study on setting up the farms will be conducted in September ahead of launching a pilot project.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has announced plans for the development of bluefin tuna farms off the coast of Pingtung, located in the southern tip of Taiwan.
Mr Ma said that there was an increasing importance attached to the conservation of the fish species and that he would ask the Council of Agriculture and the Pintung County Government to commence construction of the fish farms as soon as possible.
