Norwegian fishing company Skar Senior recently added a locally-built vessel to its purse seining and pelagic trawling fleet.

The seiner/trawler, which is also named Skar Senior, was delivered by the local partnership of naval architecture firm Marin Teknikk and shipyard Maloy Verft. It has an LOA of 48.3 metres, a moulded beam of 12 metres, and accommodations for a crew of 10.

The vessel was designed according to the owner’s specifications, which called for advanced purse seining and trawling equipment, 500-cubic-metre RSW tanks, and a vacuum system so that fish is gently hauled on board to ensure the best possible catch quality. The hull was built to DNV light ice class to allow operations even during days of mild winter.

Power is provided by a Yanmar 6EY26W main engine that produces 1,920 kW at 750 rpm and drives a Brunvoll Volda gearbox and propeller arrangement. Also fitted are three Scania auxiliary engines and two Brunvoll side thrusters. Steering is via a Kongsberg Maritime SR 642 system while the hydraulic equipment includes pumps from Allweiler and Flygt.

The firefighting system in the engine room is an Inergen system supplied by Sentronic. The bilge water separator is from Victor Marine and the boiler is from Ulmatec Pyro. Air compressors were provided by Sperre Industri and Atlas Copco.

A complete MacGregor deck equipment package includes cranes, net wings, winches, drums, and a rescue boat davit. The vacuum plant and the RSW plant are from MMC First Process. The electronics suite includes navigation and fish-finding equipment from Furuno while the lighting was supplied by Glamox.

Maritime Montering furnished the interiors in the bridge and the crew spaces, which include cabins, a lounge, a mess with galley, and a laundry area. The toilets were installed by Jets while the galley equipment is from Beha-Hedo Industrier. Other fixtures include NorSap seating in the bridge, Libra-Plast doors, and Bohamet windows fitted with Wynn windshield wipers.

All interior spaces benefit from an Isovent ventilation system. International paints are used to coat nearly all onboard surfaces. Lastly, Viking Norsafe provided all safety equipment.

Skar Senior has since replaced the company’s earlier vessel Jokul. It will fish for herring, mackerel, and capelin in the Barents, Norwegian, and North Seas.
