Samherji trawler to have added live transport capability

FISHING/AQUACULTURE WEEK

A pelagic trawler recently acquired by Icelandic fishing company Samherji has begun undergoing conversion work that will enable it to operate as a live fish carrier as well.

The vessel will retain its traditional bottom trawling equipment but will also feature a vacuum pump system that will pump the catch from the trawl net on the side of the vessel and onto the deck.

Samherji expects the use of system will eliminate the problems associated with the traditional method of taking the trawl net on board and pouring the catch directly onto the deck, which would put a lot of pressure and stress on the fish.
