The US Coast Guard safely rescued five mariners from a burning fishing vessel 85 miles (136 kilometres) east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Friday, April 30.

At approximately 17:00 local time, Coast Guard First District watchstanders received an EPIRB notification from the trawler Nobska.

Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod crews were launched. When they arrived on scene, they saw that the bow and wheelhouse of the vessel were engulfed in flames and all five crewmembers were on the stern.

The air crew directed the trawler’s crew into the water, where they were safely hoisted and transported back to shore. No injuries were reported.

A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, and HC-144 Hercules crew responded. Weather on scene was 21-knot winds with six-foot (1.8-metre) seas.
