Russian media reports that a fire broke out on a large fishing vessel still under construction at a shipyard in the city of Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, August 2.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze ignited on board the 108-metre factory trawler Mekhanik Maslak, which is being built by Admiralty Shipyards for the Russian Fishery Company, at around 11:15 local time on Tuesday.

Firefighting teams and the crews of some nearby tugs rendered assistance and successfully extinguished the blaze by 14:30. No injuries have been reported among the trawler’s crew or shipyard personnel.

An investigation revealed the fire ignited near the bow and subsequently spread to one of the freezer holds.

The incident occurred as the trawler was undergoing mooring trials as one of the final stages of its construction.

Local officials assured that the fire will not affect the vessel’s construction timeline.
