Niqitaq Fisheries, a fully owned subsidiary of Canada’s Baffin Fisheries Company, has placed an order for a new stern trawler to be built by Tersan Shipyard of Turkey.

The Skipsteknisk-designed vessel will measure 80 by 18 metres and will be built and arranged for single and twin trawl operations to catch Greenland halibut and shrimp. The frozen catch will be stored in freezer holds after processing and freezing.

Having a capacity of 1,320 tonnes of frozen-at-sea Halibut or 930 tonnes of shrimp, the vessel will be outfitted and equipped for fishing in the North Atlantic and polar areas including NEAFAC, NAFO and ICES regulatory areas. Accommodations will also be available for 38 personnel.

Construction of the trawler will take place under the supervision of class society DNV.
