The Romanian government has given its approval for the expansion of the southern sector of the Port of Constanta on Romania’s Black Sea coast.

The completion of the project, which has an estimated value of approximately €1.12 billion (US$1.23 billion), will allow access for large-capacity ships at 17 newly created berths at two of the piers in this area of the port.

In addition to the expansion, dredging activities will be undertaken at the port in fulfillment of a separate contract valued at approximately US$200 million. This will ensure that the nearby basins and channels are at optimum depths to allow the passage of larger vessels.

The dredging works will be executed across 400 hectares of port area.

The Romanian government decided upon the expansion after the Port of Constanta began experiencing a significant increase in cargo volumes in recent months.

The increase was due in part to Ukraine’s rerouting of some of its export shipments following Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July of last year.
