The government of Liberia has launched a new project that is intended to help ensure the sustainable management of the country’s fisheries sector as well as reduce instances of illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing.

Sponsored by the European Union’s Environmental Justice Foundation, the Communities for Fisheries Project was launched to, “create effective community co-management associations to secure legal and sustainable fisheries in Liberia,” said Emma Metieh Glassco, Director General of the country’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA).

The NaFAA added that the project will run until 2023 and is expected to directly benefit over 11,000 fisherfolk in coastal communities in Margibi County, Grand Cape Mount County, Grand Bassa, and Grand Kru.
