Construction begins on new deep-water quay at Ireland’s Ros an Mhil Fishery Harbour Centre

Construction has begun on a new deep-water quay that will form part of the Irish government-operated Fishery Harbour Centre at Ros an Mhil in County Galway.

Charlie McConalogue, Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, said the works involve the addition of 200 metres of quayside to the facility to accommodate larger fishing vessels and attract additional landings from both Irish and non-Irish fishing vessels

The project is being funded through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme. Ward and Burke Construction has been selected to execute the works under a contract valued at approximately €30 million (US$31.8 million).

At present, the Fishery Harbour Centre has 325 metres of quayside but is limited in deep water to a maximum of 5.8 metres chart datum and experiences congestion in busy fishing seasons. The new development, which will add 200 metres of quayside, will make the centre accessible to large vessels such as naval vessels, Marine Institute Research Vessels, marine survey vessels, and marine leisure craft.

The project has a scheduled completion date of December 2024.
