The Canadian Coast Guard inaugurated the offshore fisheries science vessel (OFSV) CCGS Sir John Franklin into service in a ceremony on Thursday, August 29.

The vessel is the first of three 63-metre OFSVs to be built by Seaspan Shipyards under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Primary functions include fish stocks monitoring and oceans research while secondary functions include search and rescue (SAR) and environmental incident response.

Sir John Franklin will be homeported at the facilities of the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, British Columbia.
