Spain’s Balenciaga Shipyard has delivered a new wellboat to Norwegian company Frøy Kapital for operation by its recently established Njord Aquashipping salmon farming business.

Njord Pioner was originally ordered by another Norwegian customer. Frøy Kapital later took ownership of the vessel while it was still under construction. The vessel was completed in February of this year and commenced operational sailings in May.

Built by Balenciaga Shipyard to a DNV-classed design by Norwegian naval architecture firm Møre Maritime, Njord Pioner has a length of 57.42 metres, a beam of 14 metres, a draught of 6.36 metres, a deadweight of 2,031, and two cargo tanks with a total live fish transport capacity of 1,500 cubic metres.

The newbuild also boasts a 12-line stun and bleed system with a rated output of 10,000 fish per hour. Also fitted are two 1,100kW RSW tanks from PTG Frionordica, anesthetisers and a desilting system from Optimar, filtration systems, and other fish handling equipment installed by Cflow. The vessel can therefore transport fish that is already prepared for processing as well as juvenile salmon.

The propulsion system is a hybrid electric configuration that consists of three Caterpillar 3512C generators driving a Finnøy propeller and gearbox arrangement as well as a ZF bow thruster. This configuration delivers a speed of 10 knots and provides power for the onboard systems including navigation electronics from Furuno. When in harbour, the vessel relies on a Scania DI16M generator.

The deck equipment includes a SeaQuest crane while Beha-Hedo Industrier supplied the galley facilities and Alu Design and Services provided seating for the wheelhouse. Crew accommodations are available for 14 people and include a mess, a lounge, and a coffee bar. Work on the interior spaces was done by Lido Marine.
