Fire breaks out on moored crayfish boat in Tasmania

A commercial crayfishing vessel caught fire while it was moored in Tasmania’s Strahan Wharf on the evening of Sunday, January 20 (local time).

Local firefighters were despatched to the scene after receiving a fire call at around 21:45.

The blaze did not spread out among other vessels moored at the wharf and so was quickly extinguished. No injuries or oil spills have been reported.

The 18-metre vessel suffered serious damage estimated at A$150,000 (US$106,000) but otherwise remains afloat.

The Tasmania Police’s Marine Division, which is investigating the incident, has not disclosed the name of the vessel.
