Tunisia’s customs directorate has confirmed that a commercial fishing boat with 12 people on board sank off the country’s southeastern coast on Sunday, October 27.

The incident occurred in the Mediterranean some 64 kilometres off the island of Kerkennah in Sfax province.

The Tunisian Coast Guard despatched one of its vessels to the area shortly after it received a distress call. All but one of the fishing boat’s crew were eventually rescued and have been reported to be in stable condition.

The customs directorate said that search operations are still ongoing to locate the boat’s captain, who has been missing since the incident.

The cause of the sinking remains unknown.
